The AI has to start somewhere - I've only really noticed the big difference between search engine and AI rather recently in simple searching. Being able to set parameters for it to respond, for example "answer my questions throughout this conversation with reliable scientific sources" then asking questions from there. For VR I can see AI being THE thing that takes it to the mainstream. Once you get a few games that can incorporate the AI into NPCs it will be a whole other world. You could play a game where you fell trees, build houses, chop or negotiate with bandits and have a conversation with NPCs in a tavern over some card games. Further down the line, we could see sandbox AI VR games in which you say exactly what you want to create as part of the game. Imagine dungeons and dragons style worldbuilding but that appears as a 3D environment in front of you almost immediately. I get what you mean but since the AI excites me just wanted to share why I find it exciting!

@@Mudpluggs Nah, I work adjacent to that kinda tech. It's smoke and mirrors: it doesn't think like people believe, and it's utility is limited to pattern recognition. That's not something that's going to be "further developed". AI poisons the same well it drinks from when it generates the articles that it later rescrapes for its own updates. It generates slop, not value.

@@Mudpluggs Nah, AI is a bubble: it's good for pattern recognition but it gives consistently wrong information because it doesn't actually think. There's a feedback loop of generated AI articles which gets fed back into AI generators, so it's consistently and confidently giving wrong answers. That's not a glitch: it's a foundationally wrong expectation to give to this tech that can't be "fixed" because it's doing exactly what it was designed to. A lot of people think it can be useful for NPC dialogue, but it's really not: game writers do it better because unlike AI, they actually think about what they're writing.

@@Mudpluggs Any tech that requires you to "imagine" what you can do instead of actually doing it despite years of the best engineers working on it is selling you something that doesn't exist.

@@CrazyAxes Of course it can give wrong information, to say it gives consistently wrong information is either weird wording or just false. I'll steelman by assuming it's just weird wording. To say it's consistently wrong would imply that there are few to no exceptions. When in reality 99% of the time it will give accurate information. NPC dialogue - writers do it better, of course they do. But in order to have a game in which you can say whatever you want to a character and have them respond appropriately, AI would be the only option and clearly has potential to do just that. Writers can still write the character, main story dialogue, they can set parameters such as how they react to information. They could code a character to have narcissistic traits that would only be put aside for a mutual cause. You could have writers write the dialogue for all possible answers a player might give, but there would still be AI implementation in which decision/response is selected. It's already in games, and comparison between things like gpt3 to gpt4 to now things like groq is already crazy. AI is young tech, what benefit does it provide you to believe it's a bubble? Genuinely curious!
